Abstract
The state of burn surface is important for healing and succesful take of skin graft.

There were significant correlation between the success of skin graft and the state of granulation tissue, fibrin and bacterial proliferation.

Little was known, however, of relationship between pH changes on the surface of burn and successful skin graft.

Author reviewed 55 patients with 2-3 degree burns of upto 30¡ 40% of body surface area, who were admitted to the Department of Plastic Surgery, and General Surgery of Severance Hospital and Department of Plastic Surgery of C.A.F.G.H.

The results were following.

1) pH on the surface of burn changes from alkali to normal blood pH progressively.

2) It is possible to control bacterial proliferation by changing pH on the surface of burn as applying topical alkali or acid on the surface of burn with corresponding bacterial proliferation.

3) In the cases of author, almost complete take of skin graft was obtained by controlling the pH on the surface of burn to normal skin pH or higher and bacterial proliferation with daily tub bath.

4) A simple method to determine the optimal period of skin graft was suggested by checking pH on the raw surface requiring skin graft.
